Firenze, alla fine del 1477, due famiglie sono in guerra l'una contro l'altra: i Medici e i Pazzi. Una delle ragioni più recenti di quest'odio è la presa di Volterra, che voluta e aiutata dai Medici infligge ai Pazzi una forte perdita di denaro e di credito. Giuliano de' Medici, che ama Fioretta, figlia del mercante Goro Gorini, si batte con Franceschino dei Pazzi, nipote di Jacopo, capo della Casata, ed entrambi rimangono feriti. Un agguato teso da Franceschino a Giuliano fallisce perché quest'ultimo, di nascosto dal fratello, sposa segretamente Fioretta, che è incinta. Durante un'uscita serale di Fioretta, un sicario di Franceschino rivela a Goro che sua figlia è la concubina di Giuliano e che Lorenzo gli avrebbe offerto del denaro per liberarsi di lui. Di fronte ai Pazzi Goro giura vendetta e chiede di essere scelto per l'eccidio che è stato rimandato alla prossima festa in S. Reprata: festa che avrebbe dovuto siglare la pace tra le due famiglie.
