Discendente dagli Hannover, spiantata da quando il padre idolatrato è perito nei disastro del Titanic insieme a un intero mondo del passato, Stella è costretta a lavorare come insegnante di musica e di francese presso una stravagante famiglia blasonata. Questa è costituita dalla contessa, amministratrice universale dedita unicamente al denaro truffaldino; dal conte Riccardo, fascista nostalgico; dal rampollo Stefano deluso da una società capovolta e deciso a farla saltare; dal maggiordomo Leopoldo, ironico su tutti e a sua volta alla deriva. Su suggerimento del conte, Stella prende parte a un rapimento di Stefano che crede finto. A colpo avvenuto quando si vede puntata contro una rivoltella dal traditore Riccardo, lo uccide involontariamente. Stefano rimane paralizzato, ma non tanto da essere impedito dal far saltare la basilica di S. Pietro. Solo Stella, finita in manicomio anziché alle Isole Felici, individua nell'alunno terribile l'autore del fattaccio anarchico e blasfemo.
